Product Overview: The Traffic Monitor

The Traffic Monitor is a wireless device that provides real-time information regarding traffic congestion and incidents for a selected metropolitan area. The display contains a map of the current traffic conditions and detailed data of specific traffic patterns.  Freeways on the map are highlighted by two rows of lights that display different colors depending on the amount of traffic at a given intersection and flash to indicate an incident.  Therefore, the viewer effectively sees a map of the area and instantly knows which freeways are moving, which are slowed down, which are congested, and which contain incidents. Information is provided for regional freeway systems down to surface level streets for major points of interest.   The user interface is simple, sleek, and effective.

Product Infrastructure and Technology

One of HigherByte’s major advantages in the marketplace is its ability to leverage established technologies and publicly funded services to secure and maintain a very low cost structure.  This includes all aspects of the supply chain from data collection, to data assimilation and transmission.

Data collection on traffic congestion is a fairly new endeavor for the ITS (Intelligent Traffic Systems) industry. As opposed to traffic incident and road hazard information, which has been available for several years now, congestion data has only recently become available through new sensor technology.  A growing number of US cities have installed congestion sensors.  Industry experts expect the population penetration rate for the sensors to be 75% by 2004[1].  European markets are already mostly covered with real-time congestion information. HigherByte will leverage this investment in data collection to acquire low cost, publicly funded data.

Higherbyte will utilize existing wireless pager networks from providers to transmit information to the Traffic Monitor.  This form of wireless communication platform provides HigherByte with two major advantages over the competition.  First, it provides a proven and reliable wireless platform which helps reduce time to market and increases data transmission quality.  Secondly, it keeps infrastructure costs extremely low by allowing for communication from one pager network base to an unlimited number of wireless devices for one low, fixed price.
